Is your course snowed under? UKKO Ambassador Tom gives you a few alternatives...

The hardcore few at your golf club will no doubt have turned up at the weekend for that last pre-Christmas round, and - mulled wine in hand - will have been faced with the ironically snow covered sign reading 'Course Closed due to Adverse Weather Conditions'. They will have no doubt, clad in their plus-fours despite the conditions, had to go closer to the sign to actually see what it said, and upon realising the cruel fate of wintry precipitation will have turned round and driven home.
Not is all lost though, putting practise did occur in large proportions in my lounge in front of some ridicolously cheesy Christmas movies on the growingly convienient 'Sky Christmas' channel. But what can us nine iron bearers do in these conditions? Well I've listed some alternatives to real golf:

1. Tiger Woods PGA Tour - I am one of the many not impressed by Tiger's recent antics, I love him. Some substitute for you and him not gracing the fairways is teeing it up on your games console and pulling off ridiculous shot from ridiculous areas and if your old school, you can have Dave Feherty's voice warm your mood.

2. Urban Golf - Anyone who has been to one of their centres will know that it is simply, awesome. Enjoy a drink from the bar while you play, don't worry about covering up your UKKO threads with ridiculous overcoats, and rest your legs as the screen does the walking for you. My favorite venue is Smithfields but the other venues are quality as well.

3. ESPN Classic - The greatest invention this decade, no exceptions. As well as golf highlights, re-live the tears of Italia '90, acquaint yourself with Muhammed Ali's awesome career and re-acquaint yourself with your teams glory days.

4. Read the UKKO blog pages - I've estimated that if your read word-for-beautiful-word all the blog entries, you have too much time on your hands and should be working. However, this will keep you occupied, insighted and laughing for many an hour.

Putts ain't falling all around us, but snow is, so have a staunch Christmas and a great New Year, see you in 2010.

Spotlight on... UKKO Ambassador Tom Ayling

Tom has recently become an UKKO Ambassador, so we thought we'd find out what makes him tick...

Your home club - Harewood Downs Golf Club
Handicap - 11.3
Age - 16

What's in your bag (we like details!)
Driver - Cobra X-Speed Pro, Shallow Face, Speeder S Shaft
Woods - Taylormade R9 Ti 3, Re.ax Shaft R
Irons - Mizuno Mx-25 3-PW, Dynamic Gold Sl Sahfts
Putter - Odyessy White Hot XG #7
Balls - Titleist Pro V1

1. Your ultimate fourball with anyone past & present?
I'd have just the one golfer, Seve. The true enigma and passion of the game is typified of the flair of the exceptional Spaniard. Next I'd have Bobby Moore, as a Hammers fan its a no brainer. Legend. Lastly, probably James Corden, the man that is the definition of lad, it'd be a laugh.

2. Where would you take them on?
We'd tee it up at Loch Lomond, quality track in a picturesque setting.

3. Which club is first in the bag?
Probably the big dog - there's no better feeling than destroying the ball down the fairway!

4. A crafty beer before the game or in the zone on the putting green with energy drink on stand-by?
Probably be a cheeky pint balanced by the energy drink halfway through the round.

5. Obviously you're wearing UKKO on the 1st - which is your favourite garment?
It's got to be the Burgundy Sleeveless Cardigan, I love the retro style going on there!

6. Any dirty tactics or squeaky clean all the way?
Despite being notorious in my other sports for playing dirty, when clad in the plus-fours it's all clean.

7. You have a 4ft putt to win the game. It circles the cup and drops in - how do you celebrate round the green!?
Sink to my knees and cry - only joking - probably the solitary fist pump and take the pain of buying the first round back inside.

8. 1st & last drink on the 19th?
Kick off with a pint, and finish with half a Jack.

9. To celebrate your win, you fill up the private jet - where do you go?
En-route to the final destination of L.A stop off in Grenada, a truly surreal place.

10. Assuming you don't have a private jet, have a nightmare and lose by the 12th - would you head straight for the driving range or drown your sorrows at the nearest local?
I'm a grafter, I'd be out on the range.

11. Why did you want to become an Ambassador for UKKO?
The threads are quality, and I really wanted to pen my experiences on golf.

12. If you didn't play golf, which other sport would you be obsessed with?
I'm a rugby and football man, but footy would probably take preference if there wasn't a course on the Earth.

13. What would you like to see in the next UKKO range?
I'd love to see some strides in there.

14. Apart from becoming an UKKO Ambassador, what's your biggest achievement to date?
Golfing or something else? Well golfing would be my Autumn Cup performance the season just gone. Non-Golfing, well i just try and make people have a laugh every day really.

15. What do you want to be doing in 5 years?
I'll probably be in my last year at Uni en-route to Sports Journalism.

New Pro Shop Stockist - KP Club

When we arrived at the KP Club, we immediately knew it was the type of Pro Shop we want to stock UKKO. It's a class act. Making our way up the drive to the top of the hill, we could see the newly re-designed course was in great condition and one look at the clubhouse and you know they mean business.

A contemporary set-up including a bar that reminded us of the Long Bar at the Sanderson Hotel in London, the Pro Shop (run by Aaron & Ashley of Desired Golf) was similarly well styled. It had all of the golf fashion brands you'd expect and we're pleased to say the guys liked our gear so much they took it there & then. That was a few weeks ago and as you can see from the snaps, they've given us a prime spot.

We'll definitely be back up there in the New Year for 18 and even though we haven't played there yet, we can highly recommend the set-up.. the chalets looked ideal for an overnight stay and rumours are there's a Spa on the horizon. Perfect for those hangovers after a night in the Long bar....

UKKO is proud to sponsor the best new Professional Golf Tour on the circuit

The 66 Pro Tour only launched in 2009 but is already getting rave reviews. That's why UKKO have teamed up with this premier tour and become it's main clothing sponsor.

Daniel Brooks [Milll Hill] fired a sensational seven under par 65 to win the final event of 2009 along with the £3000 cheque at the famous Princes links. He was also awarded an UKKO voucher (pic below) as part of his prize to spend in the UKKO online store. Lucky chap.

Francis McGuirk, the local favourite , shot a superb 66 and there were excellent performances from Richard Edginton [Effingham ] and former European Tour winner Raymond Russell on 67.

A high quality field made the most of the unusually benign conditions ,which saw over twenty five players break par . The 66 Pro Tour is now an established arena for aspiring and experienced players, which offers high quality events with good prize money, staged at some of Englands’ finest venues.

2010 will see the tour expand into more areas with its exciting one day format and we're excited to be part of what is quickly becoming the tour all Pro's want to play on.

Go golf clothing shopping on our website now..

Our socks are Hand-Made in England - here's how...

We wanted to provide a range of socks that are pure quality and a little bit different. So, being that we try to produce as much of our stuff in the UK as we can, we started searching for a factory that could produce some socks for us in the UK. Not easy!

But, after months of searching and quality control, we ended up at 1 of only 4 remaining sock factories in the UK near Leicester, and when we got there, we knew it was exactly what we were looking for. With so many ordinary socks on the market, we wanted colour, quality and comfort all rolled into one and Robert's factory produces exactly that.

The machinery he has there is quite simply amazing - think Charlie & the Chocolate factory for socks. (See below for pics). Different coloured yarns everywhere, spinning and knitting machines going at it hammer and tong, 24/7. We were transfixed.

Robert has obviously seen this reaction many times - grown men standing there as the wheels and cogs turn around you, taking in yarn at one end and spitting out a finished sock at the other. It's old news to him, but you could still see his enthusiasm for what he did. He has some old-fashioned machines and some state-of-the-art... which is exactly how we like it. Traditional methods to produce modern garments.

Not only that, but after his machines have done their bit, he sends them all to another local factory to get the toes hand-linked. So the time and effort that goes into each and every one of these is exactly why you can't get better in the UK. And you can trust us when we say they're comfy.. man they're comfy.

So, when we dragged ourselves away, we chose 3 excellent lines of socks to complement our range.

Multi stripe socks - For the guy who like to show off. (Usually us)

Contrast socks - For more conservative guys with an edge

Check sock - Iconic style for the more traditional golfer.

All machine washable, and all 90% Pure New wool for comfort and a hint of Nylon to make them last longer.

The colours are out there we know, but that sometimes how we roll. And as they're usually under your trousers, we thought it's an extravagance anyone can get away with. Not only that, but it makes for a bit of banter half way round the course too which is never a bad thing.

So take a look at our range of premium quality woollen socks which are perfect for Xmas presents and don't forget we're doing a mix & match offer so you for only £24.95 you can have all 3 pairs - each one to suit a different mood.

if you have any colour suggestion then please get in contact as we'd like to hear from you.. they can literally produce anything. And we have plenty more in the pipeline...

Some pics we took when we were there....

We've been shortlisted for our first award!! And need your vote..

UKKO has just been shortlisted in the "Best Apparel Brand" category at the 2009 Today's Golfer Awards.

After only trading since the summer, we're made up to be thought of as one of the best clothing brands on the market by the largest Golf Magazine in the UK.

Being up against the likes of Addidas, Puma, Pringle & JLindeberg firmly places us as a rank outsider considering we're only a few months old, but it's a great testament to how far we've come since launching in July. And if we can see off at least one of them it would make our year.

So, if you can spare a second to vote, please vote UKKO using the below link now.

If David Haye can do it then you never know...

VOTE HERE FOR THE BEST APPAREL BRAND 2009

And please spread the word to all fashion conscious friends.

Cheers,
UKKO

Spotlight on... UKKO sponsored Pro Chris Cousins

Our second Pro spotlight focuses on Welsh Professional Chris Cousins. The format is simple: we ask a few questions, they answer and you get to see what makes them tick.

Chris is wearing White Cotton Polo, available to buy from our online store.

Your tour/base - Aberdare Golf Club
Handicap - Professional (+2 as an amateur)

What's in your bag? (we like details!)
Driver - Taylormade R9 10* 2*0pen, 1/2" tipped Matrix Xcon LTD X flex shaft @ 45"
Woods - Taylormade R9 14* 2* Open Matrix Xcon 2007 Proto X flex shaft @ 43"
Irons - Ping S58 3-9 Iron, Titleist Vokey Spin Milled Wedges 48*, 54*, 60*, Callaway Big Bertha 2 Iron. All irons are standard length and 1/2* upright with Project X 6.5 Rifle shafts
Putter - Odyssey Tour #5 34"
Balls - Titleist Pro V1 X

1. Your ultimate fourball with anyone past & present?
Tiger Woods
Ryan Giggs
Mike Phillips

2. Before the big game, what's on your iPod to get the adrenalin pumping?
Red Carpet - Alright (Funky House)

3. Where would you take them on?
Shoal Creek, Birmingham, Alabama - A real gem of a course. It's hosted 2 USPGA major championships and is the best course I've ever played. I used to play it every Friday morning for qualifying at the University of Alabama - Birmingham.

4. What's your fairway style - Bling or brogues?
A bit of both depending on the mood and how I am playing!

5. How would you celebrate your win?
I'd take them for a night out in Cardiff.

6. 1st and last drink on the 19th?
The first would be a pint of Stella Artois and then finishing the night off with the vodka-diet coke's.

7. Your missus has gone out for the evening - what d'you cook?
Well im making a healthy fish curry tonight made with fresh cod fillets, low fat greek yoghurt, curry powder, sweetcorn, and brown rice. The ingredients sound random but they fuse together nicely.

8. Your private jet is on the tarmac and ready to fly - where d'you go?
Thats easy....Orlando, Florida! Its my favorite place in the whole world! There are brilliant golf courses, great weather, nice people, superb hotels, what more do you want!!??

9. Which club's first in your bag?
My Taylormade R9 Driver. My driving has always been a weak point in my game, but since I got this new weapon it has gone from strength to strength.

10. Who do you hang around with on tour?
I travel with 3 other guys from Wales, Ryan Thomas, Iwan Griffiths, and Cennydd Mills. Myself, Cen, and Ryan have been travelling together for years but Iwan is a new addition to the team. We all have plenty of banter and take the mick out of each other constantly. You have to be pretty thick skinned to handle the abuse that we dish out to each other.

11. How has this season been for you so far?
2009 has been good. I have done a lot of work on my game since I turned pro in 2007 but now it is starting to come to fruition. I am confident that I can compete well at European Tour School this year as it is everyones ticket to starting earning a nice living.

12. What are your main goals for the remainder of the season?
My goals are to stay focused on my tasks and not try to hard. I tend to be a perfectionist with my game so I am trying to stay in the present and make the best score possible rather than hitting perfect shots.

13. Where do you want to be in 3 years?
I want to have a European Tour win to my name.

14. If golf didn't exist, what would you be doing?
I wish I knew the answer to that question because I have asked myself it on many occasions!

On the Edge - Cleeve Hill GC, August 09

Buckets of rain, wind, cold & sheep sh*te... it must be a British August. Far from the best course we've played but well up there for the best views. The Par 4 13th green (pictured) is set in an old Roman fort about 1000ft up in the Cotswold Hills... historic. Luckily we had a 100% Pure Merino wool UKKO tank under the waterproofs to keep us warm.

UKKO, YourGolfTravel.com and Pro Ben Jones talk about the EuroPro Tour...

As the Europro tour reaches a thrilling climax we thought it only fair to review the chances of our top tour pros. As our UKKO tour pros hit top form we preview the next few venues to see how our guys will fair in their attempt to claim that prized top spot.

One of our budding tour pros is Ben Jones, who plays his golf out of Cuddington Golf Club in Surrey. Ben turned pro in 2005 following a successful amateur career and has been making waves in recent months on both the Europro and Jamega tours with some standout performances.

Ben looks forward to the upcoming events on the Europro Tour and a brief review about the courses;

Marriott Tudor Park – 4th – 6th August 2009
This is quite a short course so can see the scoring being quite low for it. I’ll have to make sure my short game is firing on all cylinders if I’m to get a good result for this tournament. The course has been a regular on the professional circuit and I’ve always been impressed with the condition of the fairways and greens.

UK golf breaks are available at Tudor Park including dinner, bed & breakfast and two rounds of golf from just £84 per person.

De Vere Venues Wychwood Park – 11th – 13th August 2009
Wychwood Park is a really decent course and I always enjoy testing myself round this course. The course measures over 7,000 yards off the tips so driving the ball well round here is vital to scoring well. Although it’s quite a new course (built in 2002), it is a superb tournament venue that will no doubt go on to hold lots of professional tournaments over the years.

Golf breaks are available at Wychwood Park for just £89 per person including dinner, bed & breakfast and two rounds of golf.

Formby Hall Golf Resort – 19th – 21st August 2009
I was really pleased when I saw this on the tournament schedule, the course has played host to the Challenge Tour previously and I’m sure it will be a great venue for us. I’ve played a fair bit in Southport previously and although I enjoy links parkland layout at Formby Hall should be perfect for my game. I’ll be expecting a good finish here.

Yourgolftravel.com offer golf breaks to Formby Hall for £79 per person from October 2009 to March 2010.

Five Lakes Golf Resort – 26th – 28th August 2009
The complex at Five Lakes is really impressive. I’ve played here lots of times over the years and the course is always in fantastic condition. They can really grow the rough up in places so keeping it straight off the tee is really important if you are to be in contention in the final round, it’s vital to know when to focus on accuracy over length.

Golf holidays are available for just £79 per person including dinner, bed & breakfast and two rounds of golf.

Fairmont St Andrews = 7th – 9th October 2009
Located about 10 minutes from the town of St. Andrews itself, although the courses there are fairly new the golfing turf they enjoy is centuries old. From the onset it has a traditional links feel with some of the best greens I’ve ever played on. The course has some really good holes and I’m really looking forward playing this event and spending few days in St. Andrews.

St Andrews golf breaks at Fairmont St Andrews start from just £129 per person including accommodation and two rounds of golf.

We wish Ben the best of luck in his quest for Europro glory make sure you look out for him wearing the latest UKKO clothing on the EuroPro screened regularly on SkySports.

Spotlight on... UrbanGolf & UKKO sponsored Pro Steve Smith

The first in a series of Pro "spotlights" or... Profiles (sorry). The format is simple: we ask a few questions, they answer and you get to see what makes them tick.

Where you based?
UrbanGolf, Smithfield London EC1

What's your role?
Head Golf Professional

Handicap?
Professional, last year’s scoring ave. 72.0 (just12 events sadly – too busy!!)

What's in your bag (we like details!)
Driver - Epon AF-101 Japan Forged Titainium/10.5 degree, Diawa Roddio 6BA Stiff Shaft @ 44.5”
Woods - Zodia 15 Degree F/Way Matrix Code 7 Stiff; Zodia 18 degree Xcon 7 Stiff

Putter - Whitlam Golf Hummer 2 First Run; 33.75”, Balance Certified
Balls - Taylor Made Red LDP

So you like details. What's your ultimate fourball with anyone past & present?
Albert Einstein - the man’s a quote-a-thon. Profound stuff from him between shots undoubtedly.
Percy Boomer - A personal coaching hero, very sage individual ahead of his time…much like myself…
Jerry Macguire - Love that movie, ticks all the boxes.
If any of them are a ‘no show’ then I’d let Megan Fox play if she asked nicely.

Where would you take them on?
Loch Lomond, Scotland - a more pleasant and challenging golfing experience you are never likely to find in my opinion. Lovely Sticky Toffee pudding in the spike bar.

Before the big game, what's on your iPod to get the adrenalin pumping?
Hip-Hop; probably some Gangstarr, though Big L, EPMD, A Tribe Called Quest would make up the bulk of the playlist.

Which club's first in your bag?
Sand Wedge, no question

What's your fairway style - Bling or brogues?
Both, depends how I’m feeling on the day

How would you celebrate your win?
Spectacularly. I am noted for my oratory, so a lengthy speech to anyone who’ll listen would do it.

Hmm... we think anyone who knows you may well agree. Your 1st and last drink on the night?
A nice Shiraz or Merlot to calm proceedings, than later a cheeky Jack Daniels & Coke

You decide to take the party for a spin in your private jet - where d'you fly?
The Monterey Pennisula; home to Pebble Beach, Spyglass Hill, Cyprus Point, Spanish Bay et al.

The next day you're feeling a bit worse for wear - what's cooking?
Full English, naughty but nice. Has to include hash browns mind.

If none of this happened and golf didn't exist, what would you be doing?
Skiing, or playing Footer. Something sport-related, what’s the point in anything else...?

Anything in the pipeline for you and at UrbanGolf?
Two new Urban Golf centres opening up, one in South Kensington and one in Spitlefields to add to the existing Soho and Smithfield Centres.

UKKO sponsored Professional Ben Jones (wearing a Merino V-neck) has continued his superb form with a top 10 finish at the Motocaddy Masters EuroPro Tour event at the Players Club last week.

His T5 placing follows on from an impressive runners-up spot at the inaugural 66 ProTour event at Berkhamsted a couple of weeks ago. Like all of our Pro's, Ben is in great form and we're looking forward to seeing him at the top of the pile soon.. most probably at the next EuroPro event at Burhill GC.

You can follow Ben and see his superb 2nd round 67 on Sky Sports as always.

Sunday 12 July 2009

Pro in the Media - Neil Chaudhuri

UKKO sponsored Pro Neil Chaudhuri shot the lowest round in a recent Peugeot Loewe Tour event in Bilbao. His awesome 66 set him on the way to a 3rd place finish in one of his first events of his debut Pro season - obviously our UKKO tops are taking effect! Big things are expected of Neil and we're glad to have him on the books.

More about his round can be found on the official Tour website... although you'll need to brush up on your Spanish first..! His presentation pic is below and more about Neil soon.

UKKO launch kicks off with Sir Geoff Hurst

On Wednesday 1st July we sponsored one of our first events, the LINC charity golf day at Lilleybrook Golf Club, an Alistair MacKenzie designed course on the outskirts of Cheltenham.

LINC - The Leukaemia & Intensive Chemotherapy Fund - is a Cotswolds based charity and a worthy cause as we're sure you'll agree.

We were also lucky enough to be playing with the legendary England footballer Sir Geoff Hurst which was a fitting way to launch our British brand.

The other members of the team were businessman Terry Hopley (who used to co-own a golf course in Australia with Ian Baker-Finch) and UKKO sponsored Pro Steve Smith, who's the Head UrbanGolf professional.

More on Steve soon, but even though we didn't win(!), it was an awesome round and one we're privileged to have been involved in. Pics below.

News - Google heaven

We just wanted to give ourselves a pat on the back... in our first week we're already at Number 3 in the google rankings. We think that's pretty impressive.. and I'm sure American Golf at Number 4 think so too...

We're liking TheSocialGolfer.co.uk

Anyone who's looking for someone to play a round with need look no further. TheSocialGolfer.co.uk is the latest way of ensuring you don't look like a muppet playing on your own. If you're away on business or just fancy playing 18 with a new face, then visit this site, register and away you go. Easy.

We highly recommend TSG for it's ease of use, unintrusive style and simply because it does exactly what you'd expect. It's a relaxed site that simply wants golfers to find each other and play golf. Can't be a bad thing. You might even find yourself turning games down soon...

In the Media - UKKO on Golfblogger.co.uk

Big thanks goes to Graham at http://www.golfblogger.co.uk/ (the number 1 golf blog on the net) who's been a top man this week - he featured the brand on Wednesday

And only today did a spanking write up on our White polo which you can read here.

We at UKKO salute you Graham and urge all to read his blog... he obviously knows what he's on about...!

Info - All you need to know about our unique titanium logo

So this is one of the reasons we differ from the other brands out there;

Most have a standard stitched logo on their clothes, but we wanted to give you something a bit different... and after months of research and testing, we came up with a logo that's made entirely from Titanium metal. Nice.

We then hand-stitched it onto all our fine merino knitwear and brushed cotton polo's with a bright contrast stitching to give you one of the most distinctive logo's on the market.

We also feel it highlights our attention to detail as Michael our designer explains;

"We didn't want our brand to be just another embroidered logo on the racks and I wanted to create a strong identity that would make us stand out from our competitors. Of course it had to look good and have a golf theme too, so we looked at the best clubs in the world, how they're made and thought that using a premium metal - titanium - as our logo would be pretty cool... and it's fine at 30 degrees too..."

Which is an important point - a few people have asked us whether the logo is ok in the wash. We know where you're coming from, but believe me, we've done the testing to prove it's absolutely fine on all of our garments and can be washed at 30 degrees without a problem. It's basically just like a large zip but as it's made from titanium, it's really light and is rust free.

So there you have it... if you want to be unique and one of the first to wear one then go to our online store now...
